Collection: The Hyde Park Neighborhood History Collaborative

Introduction

This collection of 520 scanned images from the Hyde Park Historical Society collection was completed in 2010,  through a collaboration between Historic Boston Incorporated (HBI), Hyde Park Main Streets, Hyde Park Historical Society and the Hyde Park Branch Library.

This collection highlights the historic people and places of Hyde Park and events of regional and even national significance that took place here—such as the presence of Hyde Park’s 54 th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment (one of the first official African American units in the US armed forces, which saw extensive service in the Union Army during the Civil War), or Hyde Park’s early role in the advancement of women’s voting rights (when in 1870, 47 Hyde Park women, led by the Grimke sisters, flouted the law of the land and voted in an election—50 years before the 19th Amendment gave women the right to vote in 1919!).

You can read more about the original scope and details of the project here (PDF). A full listing and description of the images is here (PDF). The image library can also be searched for keywords using the box below. The image library is best viewed with desktop computer settings.
